Boerner wanted a Realgymnasium that took special care of the so-called real sciences, that is, the natural sciences, but still integrated the ancient languages such as Latin into the curriculum in order to enable the graduates to obtain university entrance qualifications. He called this type of school Realgymnasium to differentiate it from the humanistically based grammar schools. This type of grammar school met the need for technically experienced managers for the emerging industry.
