Heinrich Pfeil (born December 18, 1835 in Leipzig ; † April 17, 1899 there ) was a German composer , editor and music writer .

Life

Heinrich Pfeil was the son of a printer . He attended the Ratsfreischule in Leipzig. Here he received musical instructions from his music teacher Carl Friedrich Zöllner .

After leaving school, he completed an apprenticeship as a bookseller and then worked as an editor of the "Leipziger Stadt- und Dorfanzeiger", of which he was also editor from 1884 to 1889.

In 1862 he took over the editing of the "Sängerhalle", the official journal of the German Singers Association . He kept this editorial office until 1887. From 1890 to 1896 he lived in Glauchau , where he published the “Glauchauer Zeitung”. He then returned to his hometown of Leipzig and lived in the Gohlis district on Straßburger Strasse (today Daumierstrasse).

Pfeil came into contact with choral music early on. He was particularly interested in folk songs and popular singing in amateur choirs. Here he was also involved as a composer and writer. Numerous songs, some of which have become very popular, come from his pen with music and lyrics. In his literary work, his aim was to appeal to broad groups of the people.

Honors

  • The Pfeilstraße in the Großzschocher district of Leipzig has been named after him since 1929 .
  • In 1930, the city of Leipzig erected a Heinrich-Pfeil monument made of Franconian limestone in the Gohlis district , the portrait relief of which was created by the sculptor Wil Howard (1879–1945).
