Heinrich Pfusterschmid-Hardtenstein (born January 16, 1927 in Graz , Styria ) is a former Austrian diplomat who was active in science and cultural policy.

After visiting the elementary school and high school (1934-1945) studied Heinrich Pfusterschmid-Hardtenstein Law at the University of Graz and practiced after graduation to the Dr. Juris in the courts and law office of his hometown

In 1952 he became Secretary for Austria of the European Youth Campaign of the European Movement and then studied economics as a Fulbright student at the University of California at Berkeley (1954/1955)

In 1956 he was accepted into the Austrian diplomatic service and in 1959 transferred to the Embassy in The Hague as an attaché . From 1960 to 1967 he was deputy head of the Austrian delegation to the High Authority of the European Coal and Steel Community in Luxembourg and opened the Austrian embassy in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg as chargé d'affaires .

As director of the department for economic integration in the Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs (1967-1971) he was responsible for European integration and the Danube Commission , and drafted and negotiated the chapter steel of the free trade agreement between the EFTA and the European Communities.

From 1971 to 1978 he was Austrian ambassador to Finland and was therefore also head of the Austrian delegation during the preparatory negotiations of the Conference for Security and Cooperation in Europe . In 1978 he was appointed director of the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna until 1986 . During this time he was co-director of the International Meetings of Directors and Heads of Diplomatic Academies and Institutes for International Relations, and he was advisor to the Royal Saudi Arabian Foreign Ministry for the establishment of a Diplomatic Academy in Riyadh . In addition to his work as a director, he led seminars, was a staff representative and member of the higher disciplinary committee and held teaching positions.

From 1986 until his retirement in 1992 he was Austrian ambassador to the Netherlands .

Heinrich Pfusterschmid-Hardtensein lives in Vienna with his wife Florentine. He has three children: Johanna, Sophie and Katharina.

voluntary work

In 1992 he was elected president of the Austrian College in an honorary capacity and was thus responsible for the preparation and implementation of the European Forum Alpbach , which has been held every year since 1945, until 2000 .

Since 1991 he has been President of the Austro-Finnish Society in Vienna and Vice President of the Social Science Working Group.
