Heinrich Ludwig Schmelka (born December 1, 1777 in Schwedt , † April 27, 1837 in Pankow near Berlin ) was a German theater actor, mainly comic roles, occasionally also a singer ( tenor ).

Life

Schmelka claims to come from a noble family and lived his earliest youth in splendid prosperity. Later his people became impoverished and he passed a most sad youth.

He began his career as a juggler, but soon freed himself from this lower class of comedians.

He made his debut at the City Theater in Riga, later he was engaged in Prague and Breslau until he came to the Königsstädtisches Theater in Berlin in 1818 . There he played in pieces by Adolf Bäuerle , Ferdinand Raimund , Karl von Holtei and others. His colleagues were Friedrich Beckmann , Ernst Ludwig Plock , Philipp Grobecker , Josef Spitzeder and Eduard Karl Rösicke . As was common with actors at the time, he also worked as a singer in singing games . A caricature from 1792 shows him in an " Operetta " by Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf .
