Heinrich Stengel (born October 21, 1884 in Bleicherode , † June 24, 1970 in Bad Kreuznach ) was a German teacher and numismatist . He was the 27th and last rector of the Stralsund grammar school .

Life

Heinrich Stengel was the son of the businessman Robert Louis Stengel and his wife, Hedwig Isabella, née Braun. He started after high school in 1903 at the school in Greiz studying philology at the universities of Jena, Berlin and Marburg. At the University of Marburg , he was in 1909 with his dissertation De Iulii Valerii usu pronominum Dr. phil. PhD. He did his legal clerkship for teaching at secondary schools in Wittenberg and at the grammar school in Schleusingen . Interrupted by military service from 1914 to 1918, he worked as a teacher at the Pforta State School from 1911 to 1924 . From 1924, Stengel was a teacher at the Greifswald grammar school and was transferred to the Stralsund grammar school in 1926 , where he was introduced as the director of studies in the same year as the rector. Stengel is described as national-conservative and shaped by humanism. In 1939 he was promoted to senior studies director, although he did not join the NSDAP after 1933. Heinrich Stengel was the last rector of the Stralsund grammar school, which was closed after almost 400 years of existence, until 1945. From 1946 Heinrich Stengel was again active in Stralsund's school service and worked there until 1959 as a specialist teacher for Latin at the high school, today's Hansa-Gymnasium Hansestadt Stralsund . In 1960 he turned his back on the GDR and spent the evening of his life in Bad Kreuznach.

Heinrich Stengel was a proven numismatist for ancient and medieval coins. He organized and cataloged the coin collection of the Kulturhistorisches Museum Stralsund , which also includes the former coin collection of the old Stralsund high school inherited in 1717 by the Swedish chancellery Christian von Staude, who was born in Stralsund and the son of the rector Johann Hieronymus Staude , as one of two large sub-collections .
