Heinrich V (Luxembourg)
Heinrich V of Luxembourg , called the Blonde , (* 1216 ; † December 24, 1281 in Mainz ) was Count of Luxembourg , Count of Laroche and Mark count of Arlon from 1247 to 1281 . Between 1256 and 1264 he also called himself Count of Namur . He founded the House of Limburg-Luxemburg , which provided four Roman-German kings and emperors in the following 14th and early 15th centuries.
Live and act
Heinrich V of Luxembourg was the third son of Duke Walram IV of Limburg ( House Limburg-Arlon ) and Ermesinde II of Luxembourg ( House Namur ). In 1240 he married Margareta von Bar (* 1220, † 1275), daughter of Heinrich II. The Count of Bar, and Philippa von Dreux . Margareta brought the Ligny estate into the marriage as a dowry . They had the following children:
- Henry VI. (* 1240; † June 5, 1288) Count of Luxembourg and Margrave of Arlon
- Philippa (* 1252; † April 6, 1311) Johann 1270 John II of Avesnes (* 1248; † August 22, 1304) Count of Hainaut and Holland
- Margaret († 1302)
- Isabella (* 1247; † 1298) ⚭ 1264 Guy von Dampierre (* around 1226; † March 7, 1304) Count of Flanders and Namur
- Baldwin († June 5, 1288)
- Johanna († 1310), Abbess of Clairefontaine
- Walram I († June 5, 1288) Lord of Ligny and Count of Laroche, founder of the House of Luxemburg-Ligny
He received the rule of Ligny from his wife as a dowry, on the condition that it remained a fiefdom of the Counts of Bar. Contrary to this agreement, Heinrich the Blonde took over the fiefdom in 1256 from Count Theobald V. von der Champagne. His brother-in-law Theobald II. Count von Bar used the opportunity of a conflict between the Duke of Upper Lorraine and the Bishop of Metz to seek revenge. Heinrich V was an ally of the Duke and Theobald von Bar joined the bishop. Heinrich was captured on September 14, 1266 at the Battle of Prény. On September 8, 1268, after an arbitration decision by Louis IX. King of France, Heinrich was confirmed as Lord of Ligny under the feudal rule of the Count of Bar.
In 1253 Heinrich took part in what he saw as the victorious Battle of Westkapelle , the military climax of the War of the Flemish Succession.
In 1256, Henry conquered Namur while Margrave Baldwin of Courtenay was in Constantinople . Thereupon the latter ceded his rights to the Margraviate of Namur to Guy von Dampierre , Count of Flanders , who took up the fight and recaptured Namur from Henry. Ultimately, the two enemies made peace when Heinrich married his daughter Isabella to Guy.
In 1262 he granted Bitburg city rights.
In 1270, Henry succeeded the French King Louis IX. (the saint) on the seventh crusade to Tunis.
