Life
Heinrich was a son of Landgrave Ludwig VI. von Hessen-Darmstadt (1630–1678) from his marriage to Elisabeth Dorothea von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg (1640–1709), daughter of Ernst I von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg .
Heinrich, like his brothers Georg , Philipp and Friedrich, converted to the Catholic faith and entered imperial services, where he rose to become general sergeant . Under the leadership of his brother Georg , he was involved in the capture of Gibraltar in 1704 .
In 1705 Heinrich was appointed Lieutenant General Field Marshal and Commander of Lerida. In October 1707, at the head of an army of 2,500 men, he defended the city in the War of the Spanish Succession. After two months of siege, he had to surrender to Philip V's 30,000-strong troop formation . After a dispute with Count Starhemberg, he quit his service in 1710.
He returned to Germany and lived in Butzbach, his mother's widow's residence. Under their influence he converted back to Protestantism .
