Heinrich Johannes Engelhard Nathusius , since 1861 by Nathusius , also called Nathusius-Neinstedt , (born June 22, 1851 in Neinstedt ; † July 14, 1906 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German librarian , archivist , historian and a well-known genealogist at the time .

life and work

Nathusius was the sixth of eight children of the founder of the Neinstedter Anstalten , ennobled in 1861 , Philipp von Nathusius and the writer Marie Nathusius . One older brother was the politician and journalist Philipp von Nathusius , another the reform theologian Martin von Nathusius . He grew up in Neinstedt. He lost his mother at the age of six. When the Franco-Prussian War broke out in 1870, he volunteered with the 2nd Leib-Hussar Regiment No. 2 in Poznan and was deployed in France. Shortly before the end of the war, he was promoted to ensign. He was also awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class. He later processed his experiences in the war in the book Ein Leibhusar im Kriege 1870/71 .

On December 13, 1875, Nathusius married Helene Hoppe (1851-1892) in England. He adopted their daughter Paula (1874–1931) and the couple had another daughter together, Margarethe (1877–1903). After the war he studied in Marburg . In 1879 he became a corps bow bearer of the Corps Guestphalia Marburg . In 1888 he received his doctorate with a paper on the German Masters of the Teutonic Order .

On February 2, 1885, Nathusius had already been accepted as a trainee at the city ​​library in Frankfurt am Main. From August 1, 1885, he worked there as a research assistant. In 1893 he was appointed second librarian . Nathusius was a recognized expert in German, medieval and modern aristocratic and family history. He died of a lung disease in 1906. Until his death he was chairman of the Association of Former NCOs in Frankfurt and was very involved in the city's warrior association.
