history

Santa Felicitas Church in Barracas

In the 18th century, barracks were built on the banks of the Riachuelo to store leather and meat and to house slaves. A bridge was inaugurated on March 24, 1791, which was of strategic importance during the British invasion of the Río de la Plata . In 1858 this bridge was partially destroyed during a flood and replaced by an iron bridge in 1871. This bridge, too, finally gave way to a new building in 1931, which is still standing today.

In the 19th century, the district became the home of some of the city's wealthiest families. Avenida Santa Lucía was the center of economic activity and the location of many famous shops.

But when a yellow fever - epidemic broke out in the south of Buenos Aires, the wealthy fled to the northern parts of the city. Today Barracas is a working-class neighborhood. Until 1946, the district was the location of numerous factories and many Italian immigrants started their new lives here. Since the end of the Second World War, however, the factories have gradually closed and residential buildings and parks have had to make way for the construction of highways.

Sportivo Barracas was a sporting club from 1917 to the mid-1930s. Barracas was the location for the 1987 film Sur by Pino Solanas .

Villa 21-24 is located in Barracas , one of the largest slums in Buenos Aires.
