Heinz Balmer (science historian)

Heinz Balmer (born April 10, 1928 ; † January 10, 2016 in Konolfingen ) was a Swiss science historian and author .

Life

Balmer grew up in Hofwil and from 1946 in Konolfingen in the canton of Bern . He graduated from high school in 1947 and initially studied medicine , but graduated in natural sciences in 1953. He worked as an assistant for geography at the University of Bern, where he received his doctorate in 1956 , and from 1956 to 1960 as a teacher at the secondary school in Signau . He then studied at the University of Basel until he worked again as an assistant in Bern from 1963. From 1969 to 1973 he was lecturer for the history of natural sciences at the University of Stuttgart , then for a year at the University of Bonn . From 1974 to 1996 he worked at the Medical History Institute of the University of Zurich , where he qualified as a professor in 1981 for the history of natural sciences .

Balmer was married with five children and lived in Konolfingen.
