Heinz Schönberger (musician)
Heinz Schönberger (born March 12, 1926 in Frankfurt am Main ; † November 25, 2011 ibid) was a German jazz musician , clarinetist , saxophonist and orchestra leader .
Life
As an autodidact, Schönberger learned the clarinet , as well as the alto saxophone , flute and piano , influenced by Benny Goodman , after the Second World War . A short time later he was playing with a small six-member band in American clubs and, along with Emil Mangelsdorff , Carlo Bohländer and Paul Kuhn, was part of the core of the Frankfurt jazz scene at the time. In 1948 he went to Munich to join Kurt Edelhagen's orchestra . From 1949 to 1951 he was first saxophonist in Baden-Baden in the dance and entertainment orchestra of the Südwestfunk . From 1952 to 1956 he was back in Frankfurt, played in the soldiers' clubs and was active with his own band at the Hessischer Rundfunk . How respected the clarinetist was at that time was made clear by the repeated listing at the top of the German jazz poll as well as the invitation to festivals. In 1956 he went to the RIAS dance orchestra in Berlin .
In 1963, Willy Berking brought him to the dance and entertainment orchestra of the Hessischer Rundfunk (today's hr big band ). From 1972 to 1989 Schönberger directed this orchestra with the aim of continuing to play the variety of popular music (hit songs, swing, other dance music, operetta melodies) with it.
Heinz Schönberger died on November 25, 2011 at the age of 85.
Works
Under his direction, 72 recordings were made in Frankfurt from 1972 with the Main Stream Power Band for the Munich record company Michael Wilkes . In his arrangements, Schönberger ensured that - following the example of Count Basie's orchestra and comparable American bands - the relationship between brass and saxophones was balanced.
