Heinz Heinrich Schmidt (born November 26, 1906 in Halle (Saale) ; † September 14, 1989 in East Berlin ) was a German resistance fighter against National Socialism and an editor .

Life

Heinz Schmidt, born in Halle (Saale), completed an apprenticeship as a miner after attending primary school . After working in this profession for a short time, he joined the SPD in 1926 , after which he was employed as an editor of various SPD newspapers. Schmidt, who subsequently studied law and political science in Halle from 1930 to 1933 , joined the KPD in 1931 . After the seizure of power by the Nazis , he belonged to the resistance to. After Heinz Schmidt was arrested in 1934, he was sentenced to three years in prison and was imprisoned in Brandenburg-Görden prison and in Lichtenburg concentration camp until 1937 . After his release he emigrated to Prague and in 1938 to Great Britain . Schmidt, who took over the management of the KPD regional group there, was editor-in-chief of the Free Tribune in London from 1943 to 1945 .

Schmidt joined the SED in 1946 after his return to Germany . He then worked for a short time as head of the day-to-day affairs department and as editor-in-chief until he was appointed director of the Berliner Rundfunk on July 31, 1947, succeeding Max Seydewitz . Heinz Schmidt, who was deposed by the Politburo resolution of October 20, 1949 for "nationalistic arrogance" and "insufficient political vigilance", was then employed in production from 1950 to 1955 as part of a probation assignment before he was appointed editor-in-chief of the magazine Magazin in 1956 he switched to the satirical magazine Eulenspiegel in the same position . Relieved of this position in 1958, Schmidt was appointed head of the press department of the National Council of the National Front . He had been a member of the Presidium and Secretary of the National Council since 1957. In 1964 he was given the honorary chairmanship of the Afro-Asian Solidarity Committee of the GDR , which he held until November 19, 1976. For health reasons he was replaced by Kurt Seibt .

Heinz Heinrich Schmidt, who was married to the physician Eva Schmidt-Kolmer , died in Berlin in 1989 at the age of 82.
