To get rid of him, Rudolf Buttmann made sure that Zirnbauer became director of the Palatinate State Library in Speyer in 1938 . He prevented his return to Munich. In 1941 he came to the Salzburg study library as deputy director . He was drafted into the army of the Wehrmacht in 1942 and became a prisoner of war . He was released in 1948 and from 1949 was a music critic for the Coburger Tageblatt . He had described the book decoration for a publication on medieval manuscripts published in 1965. Together with Heinz Bischoff , a teacher at the Staatliche Akademie der Tonkunst in Munich , Zirnbauer had edited lute pieces from an original handwritten tablature (arranged for guitar by Bischoff) in 1938.
