Heinzotto Werner

Heinzotto Werner (born June 2, 1927 ; † July  2019 ) was a German gymnast.

Life

Werner, who comes from Hohenleipisch , was drafted as an air force helper during the Second World War at the age of 15 and then volunteered for the Navy. He deserted three weeks before the end of the war, worked as a translator for the US military police and returned to Lusatia  in 1946 and passed his Abitur . Werner practiced gymnastics and in 1947 was sentenced by a Soviet military court to ten years of labor in the camp because of the regular training meetings with friends for "attempting to form gangs". He was interned in the Sachsenhausen camp, where he became part of the theater and artist group due to his gymnastics skills, which among other things ensured him better food. After his release from camp detention, he rejected the idea of ​​settling in West Berlin , but returned to his homeland.

He was the protégé of coach Rudi Schuhmacher and in 1954 was GDR champion in the all-around competition in Plauen . In the years 1953–1954 he won a total of four national equipment titles on horse, parallel bars and horizontal bar. Werner did gymnastics for Lokomotive Leipzig, then for the HSG Wissenschaft Leipzig, the Leipzig Army Sports Club and the SC DHfK Leipzig . At the international level, he was third at the World Gymnastics Festival and third on the horizontal bar with the squad of the German Democratic Republic.

Werner, nicknamed “Meester” in gymnastics circles, later looked after athletes such as Siegfried Fülle , Erwin Koppe , Karlheinz Friedrich, Klaus Zschunke and Kurt Friedrich as coach .
