Helene von Götzendorff-Grabowski , married Helene Freifrau von Maderny (born April 19, 1860 in Silesia , † May 27, 1908 in Venice ), was a German writer.

Life

Helene von Götzendorff-Grabowski began to write mood pictures, poems and novellettes as a child. She spent her youth in the province of Poznan . When her father, a senior Prussian officer, retired in 1877, the family moved to Wiesbaden . There Helene von Götzendorff-Grabowski married Baron Adrian von Maderny, a former Bavarian officer, in 1887. She lived with him in Vienna (from 1898) and then in Berlin . Her husband suffered from an injury sustained near Sedan and took his own life with poison on May 26, 1908 while visiting Venice. The following day, Helene von Maderny also committed suicide. Both were buried in the San Michele cemetery in Venice.

Helene von Götzendorff-Grabowski published stories, short stories, poems and novels under her birth name - initially in various magazines, later summarized in books. The Nordische Rundschau commented on the appearance of its first collections of Butterflies and Hilarious Stories in 1886 , saying that Götzendorff-Grabowski had been "no stranger to the German reading public for a long time", since many of their works were already in print in the "feature sections of the most widely read newspapers." appeared ”, so that reading the two books one encounters“ a number of good old acquaintances ”. They show a "pretty, fresh talent for representation, which does justice to both the seriousness of life and its cheerful sides". Götzendorff-Grabowski chose romantic subjects for her works several times, for example in her most recent novel Der Märchenprinz (1908).

In addition to her work as a writer, she also translated from English, French and Italian and worked as a columnist and critic.
