Helenenfriedhof (Baden)
The Helenenfriedhof is a denominational cemetery in the Weikersdorf district of the city of Baden near Vienna . As a cultural monument it is under monument protection ( list entry ). A large number of historical figures are buried here.
history
Originally the dead from Weikersdorf were buried in the churchyard of the Helenenkirche . However, this was destroyed several times by the Schwechat flood . As a result, the Helenenfriedhof on the slope of the Römerberg in Steinbruchgasse was rebuilt in 1832. The inauguration took place on March 23, 1832.
The older part of the cemetery was set up around the funeral hall (today urn chapel) and later extended upwards. The urn chapel itself was built in 1867 according to plans by Anton Baumgarten . Since 1957 the cemetery has belonged to the Catholic parish of St. Christoph .
There are around 1880 grave sites in the cemetery, 52 of which are urn niches in the urn chapel.
