Heliconia colgantea is a species ofthe Heliconia family (Heliconiaceae). It is native to southern Central America.

description

Heliconia colgantea is an evergreen, perennial, herbaceous plant , vegetatively similar to a banana plant and with a height of 2 to 3.5 meters. There are six green leaves per shoot , the longest being up to 140 centimeters long and 20 centimeters wide.

The up to 70 centimeters long inflorescences hang down, each inflorescence has seven to eleven spirally arranged, pink to rose-red bracts , the middle one is dark pink on the outside at the base, light at the extreme end and slightly hairy.

Each coil consists of 15 to 20 flowers , the flower envelope is yellow and hairy, the fruits slightly hairy.

Heliconia colgantea is native to Costa Rica and Panama.

The species was first described in 1979 by Gilbert S. Daniels and the ornithologist F. Gary Stiles .
