The Greek government ordered the two ships Elpis ( Greek Ελπίς = hope) and Sotir ( Greek Σωτήρ = savior) from the New York shipyard Leroy, Bayard & Co. However, since she had a financial bottleneck and could not pay both ships, the Sotir was sold to the United States Navy .
The Greek agent Alexandros Kontostavlos hired a far too small crew of 150 sailors due to lack of money, as Captain F. Gregory said. Because there was a lack of alcohol on the crossing, the crew mutinied and wanted to sell the ship in Colombia . The mutiny failed, however, and in November 1826 the Elpis reached Nafplio . The ship was renamed Hellas and became the flagship of the Greek Navy .
Ioannis Kapodistrias asked Admiral Andreas Miaoulis to hand over the fleet to Russian Admiral Peter Iwanowich Rikord. When this refused, the Russian fleet advanced against Miaoulis and surrounded him on the island of Poros . Thereupon Miaoulis had the Greek fleet burned on August 13, 1831.
