The light rust-colored leaf tensioner ( Xanthorhoe spadicearia ), also known as the banded bedstraw leaf tensioner , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the tensioners (Geometridae).
features
butterfly
The moths reach a wingspan of 19 to 23 millimeters. On the upper side of the forewing, the middle field is rust-red to brownish in color and bordered by white, black transverse lines and interspersed with some dark spots. The basal region is reddish to brownish. Two dark brown spots stand out in the middle of the white wavy line. The gray-white upper side of the hind wings is traversed by some thin, dark transverse lines that shine through to the underside. The antennae of the males are serrated, those of the females are thread-shaped.
Caterpillar
Adult caterpillars are smooth and slender. They are colored ocher, brownish or greenish and show a dark brown topline as well as light, black-brown pithed diamond spots on the middle segments.
Similar species
The dark rust-colored leaf tensioner ( Xanthorhoe ferrugata ) differs as a rule by the dark brown to black-brown discal region on the upper side of the forewing and the dark spots in the edge area as well as the weakly drawn hind wings. Specimens with a rust-brown discal region can usually not be distinguished from Xanthorhoe spadicearia externally . In these cases, a genital morphological examination is indicated for reliable determination .
Distribution and occurrence
The distribution of the species extends through Europe including the British Isles and further east to Kamchatka and the Sayan Mountains . In the north, the area extends into northern Fennoscandinavia beyond the Arctic Circle . The light rust-colored leaf tensioner colonizes a large number of very different biotopes and occurs in dry and humid as well as in urban habitats. In the Alps it rises to heights of 2100 meters.
Way of life
The moths are active at dusk and at night and are attracted to artificial light sources . Sometimes they were seen flying in the sunshine in the afternoon. You fly in two generations; the first in May and June, the second in July and August. Single specimens found in September probably come from a third generation. The caterpillars feed on low plants, including plantain ( Plantago ), bedstraw ( Galium ) and blueberry species ( Vaccinium ). The latest generation of pupae overwinter.
Danger
The light rust-colored leaf tensioner occurs in large numbers in Germany in the individual federal states and is classified as "not endangered" on the red list of endangered species .
