Helmut Collmann (born August 6, 1918 in Rehlingen ; † April 2, 1996 in Saarbrücken ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

life and work

After attending the Ludwigsgymnasium in Saarbrücken, he studied with Oskar Trepte at the State Art School in Saarbrücken from 1933 . From 1935 to 1939 he continued his studies with Karl Caspar , Adolf Schinnerer and Julius Dietz at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . In 1939 he spent his first stay abroad in Italy. From then on he made yearly trips to Europe, which took him to France, Italy, Holland and Norway.

After the Second World War , Collmann was one of the exhibitors at the “First Art Exhibition in the City”, which opened on December 9, 1945. Museum ”(today's Stadtgalerie Saarbrücken ) of which a reviewer wrote:“ The Saarland artists can finally develop freely again in the direction that inspires their hearts and their enthusiasm ”. On August 3, 1950, Collmann was one of the founders of the Saarland Artists Association. In the following years Collmann exhibited his works in Paris, Bonn, Kaiserslautern and Saarbrücken.

At the center of his artistic work was his tendency to “paint landscapes. With him there was also a certain loyalty to the objective motif. He also incorporated architectural motifs into his painting. ”His pictures“ do not show complex views, but are reduced to the essentials. ”In addition, Collmann also worked in the field of portrait painting and, in addition to still lifes, created many drawings with pen, brush, chalk and pencil as well as graphics in tempera .

In 1976, a voluntary jury from the city of St. Ingbert awarded him the Albert Weisgerber Prize for Fine Arts .

On April 2, 1996, Collmann died in Saarbrücken after a serious illness. 17 years after his death, a retrospective was dedicated to the painter and graphic artist in his birthplace in Rehlingen. Another retrospective followed in Saarbrücken in 2017.
