Helmut Hempel (* 1934 in Dresden ; † April 27, 2008 ) was a German judoka.

Helmut Hempel started judo together with his older brother Henry Hempel in Dresden . They trained together, but never competed against each other. Helmut always stayed below the weight class of his brother in featherweight as long as he was active. At the beginning of his career he had a superior opponent in Felix Krysiak from Dresden . In 1954 he moved with his brother to the newly founded sports club SC Dynamo Berlin , where a strong judo section was put together under coach Ewald Schönrock . At the GDR individual championships in 1957, he took 2nd place and that year passed the 1st Dan exam in front of the Dan college . With the team of SC Dynamo Berlin , he won the GDR team championship in 1958. At the team championships in 1959 and 1960 he reached 3rd place with the SC Dynamo .

In January 1960 he and his brother took the 2nd Dan exam at Horst Wolf's . After Henry Hempel switched to the coaching staff of the German Judo Association (DJV) in 1959 and had ended his active career, Helmut rose to his brother's weight class. In the lightweight he was nominated by the DJV for the European Judo Championships for men in 1960 in Amsterdam , where he won the bronze medal. This made him the second GDR judoka after Erich Zielke to achieve a medal rank at European championships. In the same year he won 3rd place in the light middleweight division at the GDR individual championships . In 1961 he lost in the final of the GDR championships against his Berlin teammate Günther Wiesner . In 1962 he finished with Erich Zielke behind Burkhardt Daßler and Joachim Schröder in 3rd place at the GDR individual championships in the light middleweight division and then ended his active career.

During his active time he had completed a sports degree and trainer training at the German University of Physical Culture . With the trainer qualification he became a junior trainer of the SC Dynamo under the club trainer Gert Schneider . He also became a member of various commissions and bodies of the DJV. Among other things, he was a member of the coaching council and was a member of the Dan examination committee of the DJV. As a junior coach of SC Dynamo Hoppegarten , he led numerous judoka of his club to European championship titles for youth and juniors. In the 1970s he worked closely and very successfully with the young DJV coach Willi Lorbeer and his brother Henry, who was the coach of the GDR national team. The judo world champions Detlef Ultsch and Andreas Preschel , the European champions Dietmar Hötger and Günter Krüger , the Olympic champion Dietmar Lorenz and many other dynamo judoka were trained as juniors by Helmut Hempel and prepared for their assignments in the DJV junior teams. Looking back on their work together as a judo trainer, his brother confessed: "Helmut was a judo madman who worked very purposefully and from whose work I was later able to benefit a lot in the men's field as a national trainer."

After the fall of the Berlin Wall , Helmut Hempel campaigned in 1990 for the integration of the East Berlin judoka into the Judo Association Berlin and the continuation of his sport in the new association and club structures. In 1990 he co-founded the SSG Humboldt in Berlin . In this club he worked as a judo trainer and chairman of the judo department.

For his services, Helmut Hempel was awarded a “ Honored Master of Sports ” in the GDR and a 7th Dan from the DJB .
