Helmut Meyer (writer)

Helmut Meyer (born September 18, 1904 in Berlin ; † July 23, 1983 ) was a German writer .

Life

Meyer grew up in East Berlin and Wedding . He worked as a metal worker , construction worker and clerk . Since 1931 he was a member of the KPD ; during the following years he was a workers correspondent and contributed to the publication of company newspapers . He had to stop his own attempts at writing in 1934 in view of the threat and persecution from the National Socialist rulers; He burned a manuscript for a novel that he had written over several years.

After 1945 Meyer worked for workers' building cooperatives and in the housing sector; later he lived as a journalist and freelance writer in East Berlin and headed various circles of writing workers .

His literary work consists predominantly of novels , of which “Herz des Spartakus” and “Lena in Berlin” depict the fate of Berlin working-class families against the background of German history in the first half of the 20th century from a socialist perspective. In addition, Meyer wrote short stories and books for young people .

In 1969 he received the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze and 1980 in silver.
