Helmut Thiele (trade unionist)

Helmut Thiele (born July 11, 1933 in Fischendorf , Döbeln district ; † January 31, 2015 in Berlin ) was a German youth, sports and trade union functionary. He was a member of the presidium and secretary of the federal executive committee of the Free German Trade Union Federation (FDGB) in the GDR .

Life

The son of a working-class family completed an apprenticeship as a toolmaker after attending primary and secondary school in 1947 and then worked in the profession until 1951. In 1947 he became a member of the FDGB and in 1953 the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). From 1951 to 1956 he was an assistant and teacher at the central school of the metal industry union in Belzig . From 1956 to 1959 he studied at the trade union college "Fritz Heckert" in Bernau near Berlin with a degree in economics and became a full-time trade union official. In 1959/60 he worked as an employee in the agitation and propaganda department of the FDGB district executive committee in Berlin and from 1960 to October 1962 as a sector manager or deputy head of the management department of the FDGB federal executive committee. From 1962 to 1963 he acted as secretary of the SED company party organization (BPO) in the FDGB federal executive committee.

From November 1963 (6th FDGB Congress) to April 1982 (10th FDGB Congress) he was a member of the Presidium of the FDGB Federal Executive Board and was initially chairman of its youth committee, then from 1966 to the 9th FDGB Congress in May 1977 secretary for youth and sport of the FDGB federal executive committee. At the same time he was until November 1977 Central Council member of the Free German Youth and member of the Committee for Physical Culture and Sports of the GDR , and from June 1966 (III. Gymnastics and Sports Day) to May 1978 (VI. Gymnastics and Sports Day) Member of the Presidium of the German Gymnastics - and sports association . From May 8, 1977 to March 27, 1980 he was chairman of the central board of the union of the employees of the state organs and the local economy (successor of the acting from September 1976 Wolfgang Alster). His resignation was due to health reasons. He then worked at the engineering school for civil engineering in Berlin, where he was also secretary of the SED departmental party organization (APO) civil engineering.
