Helmut Timm

Helmut Timm (born November 4, 1948 in Zarenthin ; † August 11, 2015 ) was a German youth ( FDJ ) and party functionary ( SED ).

Life

Timm, son of a farmer , attended the polytechnic high school and then learned the profession of agricultural technician . In 1964 he joined the Free German Youth (FDJ) and in 1968 the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). From 1966 he was a full-time FDJ functionary in Demmin . After his voluntary military service in the National People's Army from 1966 to 1969, Timm became secretary of the FDJ district leadership Demmin and after successfully completing the SED district party school first secretary of the FDJ district leadership Demmin. He held this position until 1974. From 1974 to 1977 he studied at the party college "Karl Marx" and graduated as a graduate social scientist. Then he was secretary for young workers of the FDJ district leadership in Neubrandenburg . From January 1978 to September 1984 Timm was first secretary of the FDJ district leadership in Neubrandenburg (successor to Gert Rademacher ) and member of the SED district leadership there. From 1978 to 1985 he was a member of the Central Council of the FDJ. From January 1986 to 1989 he was the first secretary of the SED district leadership in Neubrandenburg (successor to Dieter Müller ). In February 1986 he was re-elected to the SED district leadership in Neubrandenburg and its secretariat at the district delegate conference.

Timm saw in the Wende (1989/90) a " counter-revolution ", against which the "state and party apparatus" had not acted. He accused himself and everyone who “had political, economic or military responsibility at the time” for having “shamefully failed in the specific situation”.
