Hempstead is the county capital and county seat of Waller County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located in central southeast Texas on US Highway 290 , 90 km northwest of Houston and has a total area of 12.9 km 2 , of which 0.1 km 2 is water.
history
The place was founded in 1857 by Dr. Richard Rodgers Peebles and James W. McDade in anticipation of the laying of tracks on the Houston and Texas Central Railway . The place was named after Dr. GSB Hempstead , a brother-in-law of Dr. Peebles.

According to the 2000 census, 4,691 people lived here in 1,663 households and 1,124 families. The population density was 364.4 people per km 2 . The racial the population was composed of 39.86% White, 43.44% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, and 14.65% other ethnic groups. About 1.68% were mixed race and 24.77% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,663 households, 34.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 41.3% of these were married couples living together. 20.1% were single mothers and 32.4% were non-families. 26.3% of all households were single households and there were people living in 10.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.35 people.
29.3% of the population were under 18 years old, 14.2% 18 to 24, 26.6% 25 to 44, 18.0% 45 to 64, and 12.0% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 29 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 97.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 92.0 men.
The median income for a household in the 24,095 USD , and the median income for a family 29,744 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,673 versus $ 20,938 for females. The per capita income was $ 11,560. 29.9% of the population and 22.9% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 37.5% were children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 25.5% were 65 or older.
