Henri Braconnot (born May 29, 1780 in Commercy , † January 15, 1855 in Nancy ) was a French chemist , botanist and pharmacist .

biography

Henri Braconnot was born in Commercy and went to elementary school there. At the age of 13 he became an apprentice in a pharmacy in Nancy, where he acquired knowledge of chemistry , botany and pharmacy . At the age of 15 he started his military service in a hospital in Strasbourg . From 1801 to 1802 Henri studied in Paris , where he heard lectures from Antoine François de Fourcroy , Jean-Baptiste Lamarck , and Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire .

From 1802 he lived again in Nancy for the rest of his life. In 1807 he was appointed director of the botanical garden and became a member of the scientific academy of the city of Nancy. In the following years he mainly worked on the elucidation of the chemical processes in plants. He discovered and described pectin , various organic acids, fats and also amino acids . He was the first to isolate glycine , which he had obtained from glue through acidic digestion. He also developed the stearin - candle .

From 1823 he was a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences .
