God Dethroned ( English "dethroned God") is a death metal band from the Netherlands with a very changeable history. The only constant is its founder, singer and guitarist Henri Sattler . The band has released a total of 12 studio albums (as of 2020) since their first formation in 1990, almost all of which were released on Metal Blade Records .

history

God Dethroned was founded in 1990 by Henri Sattler, then 20 years old. After a demo recording , they released their debut album The Christhunt in 1992 . After problems with the other band members and the record label , Sattler broke up the band . Sattler founded the thrash metal band Ministry of Terror in 1994 , but left it again after recording the album Fall of Life and a European tour and re-founded God Dethroned with other members. After the release of The Grand Grimoire in 1997, there followed successful tours with, among others, Cannibal Corpse , Morbid Angel , Immortal and Marduk and appearances at large open airs such as Dynamo , Wacken and Summer Breeze .

In 1999, 2000 and 2001 the albums Bloody Blasphemy , The Ancient Ones and Ravenous were released. After numerous tours through Europe and America, their sixth album followed in 2003, entitled Into the Lungs of Hell , with which they achieved their worldwide breakthrough. In the summer of 2004 God Dethroned was booked for numerous festivals. They played again at the Summer Breeze , the With Full Force and the Vienna Metal Fest . In autumn 2004, the band released the album The Lair of the White Worm . Before recording began, Isaac Delahaye (guitar) and Henk Zinger (bass) joined the band. This was followed in 2006 by The Toxic Touch , an album that Sattler described in retrospect as "experimental" and on which, according to his own account, he had a disproportionately small share because of his father's serious illness. On October 18th, 2008 Isaac Delahaye played his last concert with God Dethroned at the Rekwi Festival and in early 2009 he switched to the Dutch symphonic metal band Epica .

In the same year Passiondale , the first of three concept albums about the First World War , was released with the participation of Roel Sanders (drums), who was already part of The Grand Grimoire , and Susan Gerl (guitar). At the end of 2010, Passiondale's successor Under the Sign of the Iron Cross was released with Michiel van der Plicht (drums) and Danny Tunker (guitar) as new band members.

On February 14, 2011, Sattler announced via the band's MySpace blog that 2011 would be “the last year” of the band and that it was time to face “new challenges”. The last gig before the band split up again took place on January 26, 2012 at the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise.

The end became just a pause, however. The “reunion” took place with the participation in the 2015 edition of 70,000 Tons ... For the time after that, Sattler announced that the core of the band “only consists of Michiel and me” and they probably only “a small selection of shows “Instead of playing gigs every weekend. On May 5, 2017, God Dethroned concluded their World War II trilogy with the release of the album The World Ablaze . Mike Ferguson (guitar) and Jeroen Pomper (bass) worked as additional band members on this work.

On February 7th, 2020 the most recent studio album Illuminati was released , which brings them "back to the dark side" in terms of content, with topics such as religion, Freemasonry and occultism, and which Sattler describes as the "most versatile album" of the band. In addition to Sattler and van der Plicht, Jeroen Pomper and Mike Ferguson were also involved in Illuminati , as did Dave Meester, who, like van der Plicht, previously played for Apophys and replaced Ferguson on guitar, who left before the album was finished.
