Life

The Duke fought with Henry IV against the Catholic League , but fled to Geneva in 1603 when he was about to be arrested for the Duke of Biron's conspiracy against the King.

In 1606 he was reconciled with the king and returned to court. Under the regent Maria de Medici he became a member of the Privy Council, which he left because of a dispute with the Queen.

He participated in a number of pro-Calvinist intrigues and later retired to his independent duchy of Bouillon, which he had acquired by marrying his first wife. He founded a library and the Protestant Academy Sedan before he died in this city on March 25, 1623.
