Henriette Beese (born November 28, 1944 in Oranienburg , Eden near Berlin; † December 17, 1998 in Manosque ) was a German literary scholar , translator , editor and dramaturge .

Life

Henriette Beese was the daughter of the psychoanalyst Friedrich Beese and the writer Eva Beese, née Polenske. Her maternal grandfather was the Greifswald law professor Karl Polenske . She spent her childhood and youth on rails on Lake Constance, the family's refuge, and since 1957 in Graefenhausen near Darmstadt. After graduating from Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium in Darmstadt in 1965, she studied at the Goethe University in Frankfurt in the summer semester of 1965 . She attended seminars and lectures in Japanese studies, art history, English studies, classical philology and ethnology. She also attended the metaphysics lecture Theodor W. Adornos , with whom she entered into an intellectual correspondence the following year. In the winter semester of 1965/66 she moved to the Free University of Berlin and studied general and comparative literature with Peter Szondi . In the winter semester of 1968/69 she took part in the occupation of the Philosophical Seminar on December 11, 1968 as a student representative. Because of this, she was expelled from the Free University of Berlin for two semesters and had to continue studying in Konstanz. After completing her master's degree there on March 19, 1970, she returned to Berlin.

From 1970 Henriette Beese worked first as a tutor, then from 1971 to 1978 as a research assistant at the Institute for General and Comparative Literature, today's Peter Szondi Institute . After Szondi's death in 1971, she sifted through Szondi's estate together with Jean Bollack and published her teacher's writings at Suhrkamp Verlag. In 1974 she received her doctorate with the dissertation "Nachdichtung als Memory" on Paul Celan with Bernhard Böschenstein . She has also made a name for herself as an essayist and editor, as well as a scientific and literary translator. She has edited works by Carl Einstein and Norbert Elias, among others, and has translated writings by the humanities scholars Gaston Bachelard , Jacques Derrida , Jean Starobinski and Gilles Deleuze as well as literary works by Djuna Barnes , Seamus Heaney , Edmond Jabès , David Rokeah and Marcel Proust . She did not complete her habilitation thesis with Eberhard Lämmert on large female figures in literature, in which she wrote about the male fantasies of the authors.

Since the end of the 1970s, Henriette Beese became increasingly alienated from the university sector and turned to literary projects and theater dramaturgy. In 1979 she worked as a dramaturge at the Berlin Schillertheater in the performance of "Die Antigonä des Sophokles" by Friedrich Hölderlin (directed by Niels-Peter Rudolph , in the leading roles Hildegard Schmahl , Bernhard Minetti and Thomas Holtzmann , premiere on March 24, 1979). She then translated Jean Racine's Phèdre . The play was performed at the Schloßpark-Theater Berlin in 1984 under Ernst Wendt with Sabine Sinjen in one of the leading roles.

Henriette Beese left Germany in the mid-1980s and lived as a translator and essayist in Saint-Michel-l'Observatoire in Haute Provence until her death . Her grave is in Entrevennes .
