Henry Cliffe (painter)

Henry Cliffe (* 1919 in Scarborough , ( Yorkshire ), England , † 1983 in Corsham , Wiltshire , England) was an English painter and printmaker .

Life

Henry Cliffe studied painting and lithography at the Bath Academy of Art in Corsham . He taught there himself and led the lithography class from 1960 until his retirement in 1981.

Cliffe's early work is influenced by both surrealism and English neo-romanticism in 1940s painting. In the 1950s, Cliffe's work became more abstract . In 1959 a series of lithographs dealing with the relationship between the human figure and the landscape is published by St George's Gallery in London.

Henry Cliffe's work has been featured in numerous exhibitions around the world. His lithographs were - among other things - part of the International Biennial of Contemporary Color Lithography in Cincinnati . He was featured in the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1954 and 1960. He was a participant in documenta 2 in Kassel in 1959 .

His works belong to the collections of the V&A Museum in London , the Cincinnati Art Museum , the Museum of Modern Art in New York , the City Art Gallery in Bristol and the University of Bristol .
