Henry Fitzhugh
Henry Fitzhugh (born August 7, 1801 in "The Hive", Washington County , Maryland ; † August 11, 1866 ) was an American trader, businessman and politician from New York . Furthermore, were James G. Birney and Gerrit Smith , both US presidential candidates, his brother.
Career
Henry Fitzhug was the son of Colonel William Fitzhugh, Jr. (1761-1839), one of the founders of Rochester , New York, and Ann (Hughes) Fitzhugh (1771-1829). The family moved to an area out of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase in 1816 . On December 11, 1827, Henry married Elizabeth Barbara Carroll (1806–1866), sister of Charles H. Carroll, of Groveland , New York.
He chose a political career when he was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1849 , where he represented Oswego County . He then served as the sewer commissioner from 1852 to 1857 and was on the Whig Party ballot from 1851 to 1854 .
Henry was buried in Williamsburg Cemetery in Groveland.
