After graduating from high school, Hartmann did community service in Paderborn . On the initiative of Marcus Herrenberger , Hartmann began making a comic about the private detective Wilsberg, created by Jürgen Kehrer, during his studies . In the run-up, both Leonard Lansink , the main actor of the Wilsberg television crime thriller, and Jürgen Kehrer, author of the Wilsberg novels, inspected the comic.

Hartmann lives in Münster, Westphalia, and works there in his own studio in the Hansaviertel .

Since 2006 he has been running a gallery in Münster, where he only offers his own work.
