biography

Henry Gross grew up in a musical family. His mother appeared briefly with the New York Metropolitan Opera Choir , and Gross himself was already playing in the city's clubs at the age of 14.

Gross became known for the first time in 1969 as a founding member and guitarist of Sha Na Na . With their appearance at the Woodstock Festival , the group became known to a wide audience and began to establish themselves in the American rock 'n' roll landscape. Sha Na Na was the only interpreter of the Woodstock Festival without a record deal ; They played about 40 minutes for 300 US dollars on the last day of the festival just before the appearance of Jimi Hendrix . At 18 years of age, Gross was the youngest musician on the festival stage. He left the band the following year to pursue his solo career.

Gross' solo album Henry Gross was released in 1972. The first minor successes came in 1974 with Come on Say It and 1975 with One More Tomorrow . His breakthrough came in 1976 with the ballad Shannon , which reached number six in the US singles charts and received a gold award . The song is about the death of the Irish Setter of the same name by Carl Wilson . While touring with the Beach Boys in 1975, Gross visited Wilson at his Los Angeles home and said he owned an Irish setter named Shannon. Wilson replied that he also had an Irish setter named Shannon, who was recently killed by a car.

Although Gross was unable to repeat this success and is generally considered a one-hit wonder , he achieved another Top 40 success with Springtime Mama in the same year. After 1977 it was no longer listed on the Billboard charts .

To this day, Gross continues to perform live and regularly release albums. In 1996 he achieved a top 20 success in the US country charts for the band Blackhawk with Big Guitar as a songwriter . Other artists who recorded songs by Gross include Ronnie Milsap , Sonny Burgess , Cyndi Lauper , Judy Collins and Mary Travers , among others . As a guest musician he was also heard on albums by Dion and Jim Croce .
