Henry Grunwald

Henry Anatole Grunwald (born December 3, 1922 in Vienna , † February 26, 2005 in New York ) was editor-in-chief of the news magazine " TIME " and the United States' ambassador to Austria .

Life

Grunwald was born under the name Heinz Anatol Grünwald as the son of the operetta librettist Alfred Grünwald in Vienna. Attended the Stubenbastei grammar school there . In 1938, his family had to emigrate while fleeing from the National Socialists. They came to the USA via France and Morocco . After graduating with honors from New York University in philosophy , Grunwald embarked on a journalistic career that took him from the copy boy to the top of the news magazine "TIME". Grunwald was best known for an editorial on the Watergate affair in which he called on Richard Nixon to resign in November 1973 , as well as for the 1985 interview he conducted with Mikhail Gorbachev as the first Western journalist .

From 1987 to 1990 (during the tenure of the Austrian President Kurt Waldheim, who was hostile in the USA ), Grunwald was the American Ambassador to Austria. 

Grunwald was first married to Beverly Suser (until her death in 1981) and her second marriage (from May 1, 1987) to Louise Melhado. Descendants from first marriage: Peter, Mandy and Lisa.
