Henry Kirke Brown

Henry Kirke Brown (born February 24, 1814 in Leyden , Franklin County , Massachusetts , † July 10, 1886 in Newburgh , New York ) was an American sculptor .
Life
Henry K. Brown studied with a portrait painter in Boston from 1832 to 1834 and then went to Cincinnati , where he devoted himself to sculpture and created his first marble bust in 1837 . In order to obtain the means for a trip to Italy , he took a job with a railway company in 1840 , but only achieved his desired goal with the support of wealthy friends. He continued his education in Italy for four years and returned to America in 1846 and settled in Brooklyn . In 1851 Brown was elected a full member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design .
Here he created the bronze group of an Indian with a panther, the colossal iron equestrian statue of George Washington in Union Square in New York City (1856), a colossal statue of Governor George Clinton , the statue of General Nathanael Greene for the Capitol in Washington and the equestrian statue of General Winfield Scott for the same town.
Works
His main works include:
- Dr. George W. Bethune , in the Packer Institute, Brooklyn (1865)
- Lincoln , in Prospect Park , Brooklyn (1866)
- General Nathanael Greene , for the State of Rhode Island , presented to the National Gallery of Art in the Washington Capitol (1867)
- Lincoln , in Union Square, New York (1867–68)
- Equestrian Statue of General Scott , for the US Government (begun in 1871; considered his best work)
- General George Clinton , as a Gift to the New York State Government (1873)
- General Philip Kearny , of Newark , NJ (1873); and Richard Stockton , for the state of New Jersey (1874)
- Equestrian Statue of Gen. Nathanael Greene , for the Washington DC Capitol (1875–77)
- The Resurrection (1877)
Because Brown loved horses, his equestrian statues are considered particularly successful. He introduced the bronze cast he had seen in Italy.
(Not to be confused with " Henry Kirk Bush-Brown " (* 1857), the son of Kirke Brown's sister-in-law, who was adopted by his wife at the age of eight.)
