Henry Kitchener, 3rd Earl Kitchener

Henry Herbert Kitchener, 3rd Earl Kitchener , DL , TD ( February 24, 1919 - December 16, 2011 near Chichester ), known under the courtesy title of Viscount Broome from 1928 to 1937 , was a British peer , physicist and politician the Conservative Party .

life and career

Kitchener, son of Henry Franklin Chevallier Kitchener, Viscount Broome and Adela Mary Evelyn Monins († 1986), attended Westminster College and Trinity College at the University of Cambridge .

His great-uncle was the military commander Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener . He inherited the title of his grandfather, Henry Kitchener, 2nd Earl Kitchener , on March 27, 1937, as his father had died in 1928. In the same year he was the Page of Honor of George VI. at its coronation. During the Second World War he was part of the Royal Corps of Signals . When he left military service, he held the rank of major . He later worked as a physicist and spent most of his working life in ICI's Alkali Division in Winnington , Cheshire . In 1950 he became President of the Lord Kitchener National Memorial Fund and in 1959 President of the Organic Food Society , and he was also Vice President of The Western Front Association .

Kitchener was a member and President of the Trustee of the Institute for Food Brain and Behavior , formerly Natural Justice . This British charity carries out scientific research into the effects of diet on behavior and brain function. Under Chairs Hugh Montefiore and Frances Jackson , Kitchener was in association with the organization for nearly 20 years. In 1972 he was Deputy Lieutenant of Cheshire .

He was asked repeatedly for newspaper interviews on the subject of hereditary peerages . He rated these as more important than life peerages .

Like his uncle, Kitchener was an English Freemason .

Membership in the House of Lords

After the death of his grandfather, he inherited the seat in the House of Lords, which was then associated with it, in addition to his title . As a result of the House of Lords Act 1999 , however, he lost the seat in the House of Lords again. He was only irregularly present on meeting days. Still, he emphasized the importance of this role.

Honors

In 2005 he was honored with the Grand Cross of the Royal Confraternity of Sao Teotonio . He was also awarded the Territorial Decoration .

Family and death

Kitchener was not married and after his death the title of Earl Kitchener died out. He last lived with his sister in a house near Chichester . His niece Emma Joy Kitchener is a lady-in-waiting with Princess Michael of Kent . She is married to actor and screenwriter Julian Fellowes . In the 1990s, she tried to ensure that women can inherit hereditary peerage.
