Life

Jaffe studied medicine at New York University and received his MD Internships doctorate in 1920 from the Bellevue Hospital Center (surgery) and the Montefiore Medical Center (internal medicine). At David Marine in Montefiore, he turned to pathology . At the age of 28 he became head of pathology in an orthopedic clinic. He stayed in this position for almost 40 years. After retiring in 1964, he completed Volume 2 of Bone Pathology (1972).

His lectures at the Hospital for Joint Diseases , NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital , New York Medical College, and Albert Einstein College of Medicine were legendary. His advice was in demand all over the world. Jaffe identified the entities of bone cysts , osteoblastoma , osteoid osteoma , giant cell tumor , eosinophilic granuloma , pigmented villonodular synovitis , chondroblastoma , non-ossifying fibroids , fibrous dysplasia and chondromyxoid fibroids.

Before his death and before the annexation of Austria , Erdheim had his collection of preparations brought to Jaffe. Jaffe bequeathed his and Erdheim's collections to Henry J. Mankin (Boston). Jaffe's collection includes over 3,000 cases.
