Life
With HMS Supply, Henry Lidgbird Ball commanded one of the fastest sailing ships in the so-called First Fleet , a large British fleet that was en route from Plymouth in 1787 on a long journey to the other side of the world. Ball's ship landed in Botany Bay near present-day Sydney in Australia in January 1788, before any other ship .
During an exploration trip to Norfolk Island , which was carried out only a little later , Ball discovered an uninhabited group of islands , the main island of which he named Lord Howe Island in honor of the British Naval Admiral Earl Richard Howe at the time . Ball visited the newly discovered archipelago several times on voyages between Sydney and the Norfolk Island and mainly explored the main island. He also made a simple map of Lord Howe Island .
The rocky island Ball's Pyramid and the volcanic cone of Mount Lidgbird on Lord Howe Island were named after Henry Lidgbird Ball, who died in the United Kingdom at the age of 62 .
