Henry Mowbray Howard
Henry Mowbray Howard , OBE (born June 1, 1873 in Washington, DC , † January 16, 1953 in Kensington , London ) was a British-American marine painter from the Düsseldorf School and an officer in the Royal Navy .
Life
Howard, offspring of the Catholic English aristocratic family Howard from the line of the Dukes of Norfolk , was a son of the British diplomat Sir Henry Howard (1843-1920) from his marriage to the American Cecilia Dowdall Riggs (1844-1907). Howard was sent to Düsseldorf by his father to study and learn the German language. From November 1890 he lived there with a Brüning family. A son of the family recommended that he train with the marine painter Carl Becker . At that time, the industrialist Fritz Thyssen also lived in the Brünings' house . He became friends with him and his brother Heinrich on a permanent basis. From 1891 to 1893, Howard attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy . There he was a pupil of Heinrich Lauenstein's elementary class . He later became a student of Fernand Cormon in Paris . In 1905/1906 he lived in Kansas City (Kansas) .
On April 24, 1917 he married in London Norah Florence Annie Dunlop-Watson (1885-1974), the daughter of Major John Dunlop-Watson. The couple had two children.
Howard served as a naval officer in the Royal Navy and rose to the rank of commander in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve . He fought in the First and Second World Wars . In 1940 Howard was British liaison officer in the French Ministry of the Navy. For his military achievements he was accepted as a knight in the French Legion of Honor and as an officer in the Order of the British Empire .
