Henry Joseph Richter (born April 9, 1838 in Neuenkirchen (Oldenburg) , Diocese of Münster , as Heinrich Joseph Richter ; † December 26, 1916 in St. Mary's Hospital, Grand Rapids , Michigan ) was a German bishop in the United States .

Richter was the son of Johann Heinrich Theodor Richter and Anna Maria Elisabetha Richter, née Albers. In Germany he attended local schools and had a private tutor. In 1854 he emigrated to Cincinnati , Ohio , and attended St. Xavier High School . He then went to St. Joseph's College in Bardstown and Mount St. Mary's Seminary. In 1860 he was sent to the Pontifical North America College for further studies and graduated in 1865 with a doctorate in theology.

On June 10, 1865, Cardinal Costantino Patrizi Naro ordained him a priest in Rome . In October 1865 he returned to Cincinnati and was appointed Professor of Dogmatic Philosophy and Liturgy at Mount St. Mary's Seminary. At the same time he was chaplain of the Sisters of Charity in Cedar Grove. In 1866 he became vice-president of the seminary. From 1870 to 1883 he was the first pastor of St. Lawrence in the Price Hill neighborhood of Cincinnati.

Pope Leo XIII. appointed him on January 30, 1883 first Bishop of Grand Rapids . On April 22, 1883, William Henry Elder , Coadjutor Bishop of Cincinnati , ordained him episcopal at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew , Grand Rapids. Co- consecrators were Caspar Henry Borgess , Bishop of Detroit , and William George McCloskey , Bishop of Louisville . In 35 years as a bishop, the number of Catholics tripled.
