Henry Frederick "Fritz" Schaefer III. (Born June 8, 1944 in Grand Rapids , Michigan) is an American theoretical chemist .

life and work

Schaefer graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in chemical physics in 1966 and received his doctorate from Stanford University in 1969 . He was then a professor at the University of California, Berkeley from 1969 to 1987 and from 1987 professor at the University of Georgia , where he is director of the Center for Computational Chemistry and Graham Perdue professor at Franklin College of Arts and Sciences .

In 1979/80 he was founding director of the Institute for Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin and was Wilfred T. Doherty Professor there . He was visiting professor at the University of Paris, the ETH Zurich and the Australian National University .

Schaefer deals with theoretical and computational quantum chemistry ( ab initio calculations). He is involved in over 1300 publications (2012). Some of his publications led to the review of traditional models, such as his prediction of the structure of methylene from theoretical quantum mechanical calculations alone in 1970 (and contradicting Gerhard Herzberg's model ), which gave the reputation of ab initio calculations a boost.

In 1972 he became a Sloan Research Fellow . He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (1977) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (since 2004), a member of the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science and he was long chair of the World Association of Theoretical and Computational Chemists (WATOC).

Schaefer has published and lectured on religion and science. He expressed sympathy for intelligent design .
