Henry Sherwood (born October 9, 1813 in Bridgeport , Connecticut , †  November 10, 1896 in Wellsboro , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1873 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1817, Henry Sherwood moved with his parents to Catharine, New York State , where he attended public schools. During the Texas Revolutionary War in 1836 he served in the Texas Army under the command of Sam Houston . In 1840 he settled in Wellsboro. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1847, he began to work there in his new profession. He was also elected mayor of his new hometown. He joined the Democratic Party .

In the 1870 congressional election , Sherwood was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 18th  electoral district of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Republican William Hepburn Armstrong on March 4, 1871 . Since he was not confirmed in 1872, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1873 . After serving in the US House of Representatives, Sherwood became president of the Wellsboro & Lawrenceville Railroad and the Pennsylvania Division of the Pine Creek Road . He died on November 10, 1896 in Wellsboro, where he was also buried.
