biography

Jordan comes from a noble family; accordingly he was given higher education . After he was threatened with expulsion for participating in demonstrations , he obtained his university entrance qualification in Trieste in 1863 . He initially studied at the University of Vienna , but in 1863 he moved to the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. After four years, he obtained his first academic degree, but was unable to start a master’s degree because he was suffering from pneumonia . He went traveling and was confronted with a Swedish gymnastics institute in New York . He began treating in New York and also opened a midwifery school. Henryk Jordan returned to Krakow, where he became professor of gynecology and obstetrics from 1895 with the support of the Krakow anatomist Ludwik Teichmann and, as successor to Maurycy Madurowicz (1831-1894), he had previously worked in England and Germany. Between 1895 and 1901 he was a member of his city in the Galician state parliament . In this position, he implemented the first Jordana Park in Krakow in 1889 , which was the first public “active playground” in Europe.

The Jordana Park included opportunities for sports from all over Europe: 14 different areas offered opportunities for gymnastics or team sports, for example. Jordan himself was significantly involved in the implementation of his plans and continued to develop this playground until the end of his life. He set up a system of competitions and had carers work with the children. After his death, several facilities were opened based on his model.
