career

Herbert Binder completed his first league game on October 20, 1957 in the jersey of the Stuttgarter Kickers. Under coach Oswald Pfau he stormed in a 2-2 home draw against SSV Reutlingen at the side of the two-time goalscorer Ferdinand Zechmeister on the left wing. For the first time as a left defender, he came into the then World Cup system on December 1, 1957 in a 2-2 away draw against FSV Frankfurt. With Herbert Dienelt he formed the regular defenders pair of the Kickers for years. In his first season in the league, he made 18 competitive appearances, but the Kickers were relegated to the second division in the year after Rolf Geiger moved to local rivals VfB Stuttgart. In his second season, 1958/59, he celebrated the championship in the 2nd division with team-mates like Zechmeister (18 goals), goalkeeper Manfred Eglin and Heinz Lettl (22 goals) with 49:19 points and thus his return to the first class Oberliga Süd. Despite the newcomers such as Pal Csernai, Karl-Heinz Kott and Helmut Wahler, the Kickers were immediately relegated to the second division. Then Binder was the last three rounds in the league system at that time in the 2nd League South under coaches such as Karl-Heinz Grindler (1960/61), Jenö Csaknady (1961/62) and Hans Eberle (1962/63) in action for the Kickers. From the 1963/64 season, the first year of the Bundesliga, the “blues” from Degerloch belonged to the new Regionalliga Süd. For three rounds, until 1965/66, the defender was still part of the regular line-up of the Kickers and ended his higher-class playing career with fifth place in the 1966 World Cup. Now players like Dieter Schurr , Peter Schäffler , Horst Haug , Otto Garhofer , Peter Wenzel , Rudolf Kröner and Gert Fröhlich had accumulated at his side . With the game on May 22, 1966 in a 2-2 home draw against FC Bayern Hof, Binder ended his league career with the Stuttgarter Kickers. The Kickers defense formed against Hof in front of goalkeeper Siegfried Gräter with Dienelt, Binder, Schurr, Steeb and Schäffler.

After his active time as a footballer, Binder was in charge of the Kickers amateurs in the 1971/72 season.
