Herbert Friedl (born November 22, 1943 in Unterweitersdorf ; † July 27, 2018 ) was an Austrian painter , graphic artist , interior and object designer.

Live and act

Friedl came from a working-class family of peasant origin and initially completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter before he attended the graphic design department at the Technical College in Linz . For years he was a guest student at the University of Artistic and Industrial Design in Linz and took part in several artist symposia and summer academies. From 1978 he worked as a freelancer in the fields of painting, printmaking, object and room design. He lived and worked in Pregarten and Linz, dealing with his immediate, formative living space.

While he was making etchings in the late 1970s , he began creating abstract, symbolic woodcut images from the early 1990s . From 1999 he made works using the mezzotint technique . He took part in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad and was repeatedly prizewinner in competitions. Several exhibition catalogs have been published, and radio and television programs about individual projects and works have been produced by him.

Several of his cycles received a lot of attention for their own way of resisting the strategy of forgetting.

Friedl designed a number of meditation and sacred rooms, including the euthanasia memorial in Hartheim Castle from 1999 to 2003 .

Friedl was a member of the Zülow Group , the Professional Association of Fine Artists of Upper Austria and the Upper Austrian Art Association .
