Herbert Girgensohn

Herbert Girgensohn (born September 27th July / October 9th  1887 greg. In Wolmar , Livonia Gouvernement , † September 11th 1963 in Glücksburg (Baltic Sea) ) was a German-Baltic theologian of Lutheranism .

Life

Herbert Girgensohn's father was a German-Baltic pastor . After attending school in Saint Petersburg , Girgensohn began studying Protestant theology at Dorpat University in 1906 . He moved to the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin (1910/11) and the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen (1912/13).

After graduating as Dr. theol. (1913) he was vicar from 1914 and field preacher in the Baltic States in 1919/20 . In 1921 he became pastor at the Petrikirche (Riga) . From 1927 he was also a lecturer in practical theology at the German-speaking Herder University in Riga . According to the German-Soviet non-aggression pact , Girgensohn had to leave Latvia in the course of the resettlement of the Baltic Germans in 1939. In 1940 he became a pastor in Poznan . Fled west in January 1945, Girgensohn became pastor at the Marienkirche in Lübeck . He took care of the expellees from the eastern regions of the German Empire . The Eastern Church Committee (recognized by the EKD in 1949) elected him first chairman in 1946. At almost the same time Girgensohn became a lecturer (from 1955 professor) for practical theology at the Bethel Church University . He resigned the chairmanship of the Eastern Church Committee in 1951, but continued to work through publications to process the experiences of the displaced. With his advocacy of an understanding, he prepared the Ostdenkschrift in 1965. He spoke of Teodors Grīnbergs at the coffin .
