Herbert Gray

Herbert Grau (born August 22, 1916 in Frankenmarkt , † September 20, 1973 in Linz ) was an Austrian adult educator.

Life

Herbert Grau lived in Linz from the age of 11 and attended the Bundesrealgymnasium and studied German and English at the University of Vienna with a doctorate in 1939. He did military service from 1939 to 1945 and did his habilitation in German studies in 1943 during a wounded leave . In addition to his studies, he worked as a German lecturer for foreign students, and in 1941 he became a formal academic assistant while doing military service.

In 1945 he became head of the cultural office of the city of Linz and was initially deployed in the occupation office because of his knowledge of English. In 1947 he became head and founder of the Linz Adult Education Center . He was involved in numerous studies abroad, particularly with the theory of adult education .

Grau was the founder and, from 1958, Vice President of the Association of Austrian Adult Education Centers , in particular as a pedagogical consultant he led the summer weeks for lecturers for several years. From 1953 Grau was a representative of adult education in the Austrian UNESCO commission .

From 1964 to 1965 he worked for UNESCO in Greece to promote the establishment of urban adult education centers.

From 1969/1970, Grau received teaching assignments on the subject of adult education at the University of Social and Economic Sciences in Linz and at the Federal Education Academy in Linz.

Herbert Grau was more the fundamental, program-oriented, conceptual - Wolfgang Speiser the mediator, conciliatory and advertiser.

Grau lived to see the 25th anniversary of the Volkshochschule Linz in 1972 and died in 1973 after a serious illness in the Linz General Hospital and was buried in the St. Barbara cemetery .

Part of Herbert Grau's estate is in the Austrian Adult Education Center .
