As chief designer at Siemens AG, Schultes had a decisive influence on the company's appearance and products. In addition to his job as a design manager, he has always developed his own designs for smaller companies. He campaigned for the interests of German design in numerous institutions. In 1996 he presented his concept of the “Design light”: “It is not enough to design the products just as eco-efficient, that is, to make them ecologically satisfactory; They must also be of high quality, reliable, safe and attractive in the future to the extent that it is trendy, in or even chic to own and use these products. "

After studying engineering and design in Munich, which he completed as a scholarship holder of the Kulturkreis in the Federal Association of German Industry , he worked as a designer at Siemens AG from 1961 to 1967 and was assistant to chief designer Edwin A. Schricker (1921–2008).

In 1967 he founded Schlagheck Schultes Design (today: Schlagheck Design ) in Munich together with Norbert Schlagheck .

In 1985 Herbert H. Schultes became chief designer at Siemens AG. Under the direction of Schultes, the design department was spun off in 1997 through a merger with the Group's exhibition stand construction department and initially operated as Siemens Design & Messe GmbH, and from 1999 as designafairs GmbH. From 1997 to 2000, Schultes was the company's managing director.

As chairman of the appearance of the Federal Republic of Germany, he is significantly involved in the preparation and execution of the International Design Conference Aspen (IDCA), which took place in 1996 under the motto "Design: Visions of German Design". It is the most comprehensive and important international presentation of German design to date.

Schultes was involved in setting up the industrial design course at the Munich University of Applied Sciences , after which he taught industrial design at the Cologne factory schools . He is an appointed member of the Free Academy of the Arts Mannheim, cultural research and mediation.
