Herbert Albert Wilhelm Kasten (born February 23, 1913 in Stralsund , † September 9, 1976 in Hanover ) was a German writer .

Life

Herbert Kasten was the son of a railway official. He attended elementary and middle school and volunteered for a newspaper. In 1932 he went to Bremen and got the Abitur there . He then studied at the Berlin Administration Academy . After the war and his release from French captivity in 1947, he returned to his hometown Stralsund in 1948.

He became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED).

Herbert Kasten was responsible for the literary design of the festival program for the opening of the 1959 Baltic Sea Week in Stralsund. This and his novel about Stralsund councilor Karsten Sarnow , published in 1958, were, in connection with a speech by Karl Mewis on June 28, 1959 at the Alter Markt in Stralsund, the occasion for a campaign by the SED against Herbert Kasten. Mewis' speech and subsequently ordered contributions to the discussion were published in the Ostsee-Zeitung , and the Kulturbund der DDR dealt intensively with Herbert Kasten's assessment of Sarnow. On October 30, 1959 Herbert Kasten went to West Berlin ; he returned briefly to the German Democratic Republic (GDR) at the urging of the SED and the Writers' Association, as well as at the request of his daughter ; on November 12, 1959, he was brought to the writers' sanctuary at Schwielowsee . After a three-week stay, he finally left the GDR for good in December 1959.
