Herbert Miehsler

Herbert Miehsler (born June 20, 1934 in Vienna ; † July 1, 1986 ) was an Austrian legal scholar. He was a full professor for international law at the University of Salzburg and founded the Austrian Institute for Human Rights in Salzburg.

Life

Herbert Miehsler studied law in Vienna after graduating from high school in 1952. In 1957 he received his doctorate and was then initially an employee of the federal state of Lower Austria . He completed his habilitation in 1962 with the thesis "South Tyrol as a problem of international law" with Alfred Verdroß at the University of Vienna . In 1965 he became associate professor and in 1967 full professor of international law at the University of Graz . In 1969 he moved to the University of Salzburg and became director of the Institute for International Law and Foreign Public Law, which was founded in the same year. Miehsler taught in Salzburg until his death. As a full professor in Salzburg, he was among other things the editor of the "International Commentary" on the European Convention on Human Rights ( edited today by Stefanie Schmahl and Katharina Pabel ) .

Miehsler died at the age of 52. From 1987 to 1996 he was honored with annual commemorative lectures at the University of Salzburg.

Miehsler was married to the psychologist Ursula Miehsler-Bolzano since 1967. He was the father of a daughter (* 1969) and a son (* 1972).
